How to Choose a Dance Style You Enjoy: 7 Tips for Beginners

How to choose a dance style can be exciting but also challenging with so many options like Hip Hop, Salsa, Ballet, and Contemporary. Finding a style you love is key to staying motivated and enjoying your dance journey. Here are 7 tips to help you choose the perfect dance style for you!

Explore Different Dance Styles

Before deciding, try out different styles! Watch YouTube videos, take trial dance classes, or visit local studios. Trying different types of dance can help you figure out what feels most natural. When I first started dancing, I tested a bunch of styles, from Hip Hop to Belly Dance. It helped me find what I enjoyed most. Even now, I still explore new classes like Hawaiian Hula!

You don’t have to decide right away—sampling different styles is a great way to find one that clicks with you.

Consider Your Personality

Different dance styles match different personalities. If you like fast, high-energy activities, styles like Hip Hop or Latin Dance might be for you. If you’re more into smooth, flowing movements, try Ballet or Contemporary.

For me, I love both energetic and structured movements, which is why I enjoy both Hip Hop and Belly Dance. Think about what fits your personality, and you’ll find a style that feels right.

Listen to the Music

The music you love can help guide your dance style. If you like music with a good beat, you might enjoy styles like Hip Hop or Pop dance. If you prefer classical or instrumental music, Ballet or Ballroom might be more your speed.

I’ve always loved music, and anything with a great beat makes me want to move. Let the rhythm you love help you choose a dance style!

Match the Style to Your Goals

Think about why you want to start dancing. Do you want to get fit, have fun, or learn something new? Different dance styles can help with different goals. If you want to stay in shape, Hip Hop or Latin dance might be great. If you want to improve flexibility, try Ballet or Contemporary.

When I started, I just wanted to get out of the house. But later, I realized I wanted to improve my skills and fitness, so I started taking more challenging classes. Think about your goals and pick a style that fits.

Start with What Feels Comfortable

Pick a style that feels natural to you. If one style feels awkward or too hard, try something else! When I started, Hip Hop felt easy and fun, but I struggled with styles like Contemporary. If you’re uncomfortable with one style, start with something easier and try more challenging styles later.

Try Group or Partner Dances

Group or partner dances like Salsa, Ballroom, or Swing are super fun! Dancing with others adds energy and excitement. I used to dance alone at home, but once I tried group classes, I realized how much I loved it! The social aspect of dance can keep you motivated and help you enjoy it even more.

Stay Open to Change

Your favorite dance style might change as you learn more. When I started, I loved Belly Dance, but after trying Hip Hop, I fell in love with it too. Don’t be afraid to explore new styles and let your preferences evolve as you improve.

How to Choose a Dance Style Final Thoughts

Choosing a dance style is all about finding what makes you feel happy and excited. Whether it’s Hip Hop, Ballet, Salsa, or something else, dance is a way to express yourself and have fun. Keep exploring, and you’ll find the style that feels just right for you.
